The Basics of Blackjack

Originally played in French casinos in the 1700s, blackjack is a classic casino game with individual decks of cards. Each player is dealt two cards. The object of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand. To do so, the player must have a hand that is closer to 21, called “blackjack,” than the dealer’s.

There are a few different ways to play the game, but the main objective is to draw a hand worth at least 21 points. This is also referred to as a “natural.” The goal is to beat the dealer’s hand, but not bust. If the dealer’s hand is close to 21, the player and dealer will both lose their bets.

The game is played with a single deck of 52 cards. The cards are valued as indicated in the rules. For instance, the ace is considered a 1 or 11 point card. The cards that have a value of 10 are known as kings, queens, and jacks.

There are a few side bets available on the table, but the main bet is the wager on getting a pair as the first two cards. A pair can be a split pair of aces or a pair of kings. The most important thing to remember is to never exceed 21. You should stay under this total in order to avoid busting.

You can also place a side bet on the dealer busting. You are required to wager a certain amount of money for this type of bet. If the dealer does bust, half of the bet will be returned to the player. However, this is not a recommended option. This bet is a bad bet in the long run.

One of the most popular side bets is the insurance bet. This bet pays out 2:1 if the dealer’s face up card is an ace. The other side of this bet is the “Dealer Match” bet, which pays out when the player’s cards match the dealer’s up card. The insurance bet is the most obvious and is usually the only one offered on the table. It costs about 50% of the initial bet and is placed on a special “insurance bar” that is placed above the player’s cards.

Another good bet on the blackjack table is the multi-hand option. This option allows several players to take turns at playing a hand. If the dealer has a blackjack, all of the players can continue the hand, although the dealer has a better chance of winning with a ten than with a six. The multi-hand bet is a better way to win.

You might have noticed that some blackjack games pay out even money for a hand that contains an ace. This is a no-brainer, but the payout is not always the same as the rules indicate. You might want to look into the payout structure of the specific game before you start playing. Some blackjack tables will reduce the payout to 6 to 5, while others will award even money for all hands that contain an ace.
